The ExploreStation report has been published!

Thank you for your interest in the ExploreStation programme and for sharing your thoughts, feedback and ideas on Network Rail’s new design for small and medium sized stations across Great Britain. We had a wonderful response to our programme, across Commonplace, workshops and immersive virtual reality experiences, and the report detailing all your reviewed and collated feedback is now ready. 

The report was formally launched at a programme of events at the London Design Festival on Wednesday this week and we have been thrilled with the response. 

In addition to containing insights and recommendations to Network Rail and the design team based on what you said, the report also provides strategic insights and recommendations to Network Rail about delivering the new proposed station and to the infrastructure sector about design and engagement programmes.

The report also details all the activities we undertook and our overall approach to the programme. We hope you find it as interesting and exciting as we found it to lead the programme and meet and hear from people across Great Britain.

ExploreStation phase 2 kicked off last week with the launch of the first virtual reality immersive experience events, led by 

, in York before we head off on a tour of Great Britain with a programme of collaborative workshops and immersive experiences. 

We’re continuing to gather your insights, opinions, and ideas on the HUB station proposals, and we’d also like to know how you think future stations should deliver for those in their communities.

Collaborative Workshops & Immersive Experiences

Whether you’re a regular commuter, an occasional traveller or someone who lives close to the railway, ExploreStation is your opportunity to be part of developing plans for future passenger hubs – local stations putting communities, the planet, and people at their heart. There are still spaces available to attend our collaborative workshops and virtual reality immersive experiences. We’ll be visiting locations across Great Britain in the coming weeks, and we’d love to hear from you. 

Each of our activities is being led by pioneering organisations in their field.

The journey to a new station

<h3>In this section we outline what ExploreStation is, where we are now and how we got here.</h3><h3>3 minute read</h3>Network Rail want to build on the enduring legacy of Great British railway stations to create the transport hubs of the future.In May 2021, Network Rail and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) announced Edinburgh-based <a href="https://www.7narchitects.com/">7N Architects</a> as the winner of its Re-imagining Railway Stations competition. 7N Architect&#39;s is leading a design team of ARUP, LUC and Gardiner &amp; Theobold.7N Architect&#39;s design, which is explained in detail across the different sections of this website, addresses the changing needs of passengers and local communities as well as significantly contributing to Network Rail&#39;s targets for delivering a sustainable railway.<div class="fr-img-space-wrap"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/commonplace-digital-limited/image/upload/v1632923478/projects/tq5rdubhmpircs61tzbx.jpg" style="width: 1200px;" class="fr-fic fr-dii">Image of winning station design; courtesy of 7N Architects&nbsp;</div>

<h3>The story so far: ThinkStation and Re-imagining Railway Stations</h3>Between November 2019 and February 2020, Design Council, alongside Network Rail, ran a national engagement exercise called &#39;ThinkStation&#39;. Over the course of the three months, 11 workshops were held in four cities and Design Council spoke to over 320 people representing a cross-section of the British public to understand their priorities for future railway stations. You can read about the feedback from the ThinkStation workshops&nbsp;<a href="https://www.designcouncil.org.uk/resources/report/download-design-councils-thinkstation-report" target="_blank">here</a>.Through these ThinkStation conversations, nine key priorities were identified for the next generation of railway stations:<ul type="disc"><li>Support existing and new communities in their local area</li><li>Reflect and embody local character and heritage</li><li>Provide consistent quality of space and service</li><li>Establish connections with and between town centres and/or high streets</li><li>Celebrate and improve the quality of green spaces and open spaces and/or provide access to them</li><li>Be welcoming and facilitate inclusive travel</li><li>Support and better integrate cross-modal transport&nbsp;</li><li>Help to address climate change&nbsp;</li><li>Ensure longevity by accommodating changes of use, capacity and trends</li></ul>These priorities informed the design brief for the Re-Imagining Railways Stations international competition. <div class="fr-img-space-wrap"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/commonplace-digital-limited/image/upload/v1632923690/projects/djplozezd7ic4sjrujmx.jpg" style="width: 1200px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib">Participants at ThinkStation workshop; Image copyright: Design Council&nbsp;</div>

<h3>Why Network Rail are focusing on small and medium stations &ndash; and how these are defined</h3>In 2019 there were over 1.8 billion rail passenger journeys in Great Britain. Many people&rsquo;s daily lives are shaped by their experiences of rail travel, from the spaces passed through on departure and arrival to the trains travelled on and the mobile apps used for navigating connections.Britain&rsquo;s rail stations are classified into six categories from A to F, based on the volume of passenger trips per year. Small to medium&nbsp;stations are identified as D, E and F stations.&nbsp;Of Network Rail&rsquo;s 2,500 stations, approximately 80% &ndash; over 2,000 stations &ndash; are classified as small to medium (or D, E and F stations). By improving the quality and experience of the most commonly occurring categories of stations, Network Rail will positively impact millions of lives.&nbsp;What does D, E and F&nbsp;mean?<ul type="disc"><li>D stations are staffed medium-sized stations with 0.25&ndash;0.5 million passenger trips per year. There are 298 across Britain.</li><li>E stations are small staffed stations with under 0.25 million passenger trips per year. There are 679 across Britain.</li><li>F stations are small unstaffed stations with under 0.25 million trips per year. <h3>What is ExploreStation?</h3>ExploreStation is an opportunity to help co-develop the proposal from 7N Architects, ensuring the design reflects the priorities of future users.&nbsp;Through ExploreStation, Network Rail wants to hear your views on how stations can contribute to communities now and in the future.Continuing the conversation started with ThinkStation, Design Council is now partnering with experts in different types of engagement to stimulate a national conversation about what the British public &ndash; in other words many groups of people with diverse needs &ndash; would like to see at their local stations.&nbsp;The Glass-House Community Led Design is holding online and in-person workshops from November 2021 until early 2022. Digital Urban is leading pop-up immersive events taking place in early 2022. And this website, created in partnership with Commonplace, enables ExploreStation to reach out to anyone with access to the internet to gather feedback on the design proposal as it takes shape.&nbsp;Details of forthcoming workshops and pop-up events will be announced on this website. 1. The design principles

<div class="fr-img-space-wrap"><h3>In this section, we want to know your views on the key principles of the design.&nbsp;</h3><h3 class="fr-img-space-wrap2">3 minutes to complete&nbsp;</h3>Network Rail has commissioned the 7N Architects team to design a new type of station for small and medium sites across Britain. Describing their approach, the architects say: &quot;Our concept is designed to capture the identity of Network Rail in the 21st century as a progressive, sustainable mode of transport with a pivotal civic role in serving communities throughout the country.&quot;In this section we explain the following key design principles:1. Community-driven design 2. Open and transparent spaces 3. Sustainable energy use&nbsp; 4. Kit-of-parts approach 5. Inclusive and accessible design</div>

<h3>Community stations</h3>A key ambition of the new design is to enhance the ways stations contribute to local communities. <h3>Open and transparent spaces</h3>The design proposal brings a sense of lightness and openness to stations. <h3>Environmental sustainability</h3>The station will generate renewable energy to provide power for the stations. <h3>Kit of Parts</h3>The 7N Architects team has proposed a kit-of-parts approach, also referred to as &#39;modular design&rsquo;. The kit can be applied in different configurations to suit stations of varying scale, different environments and diverse community needs. Flexibility is a key benefit of the approach. 2. The 'kit of parts'

<h3 style="text-align: left;">In this section, we explain the kit-of-parts approach and ask for your initial thoughts on the individual components of the station design.&nbsp;</h3><h3>3 minutes to complete&nbsp;</h3>The station design is based on a catalogue of components &ndash; or a kit of parts. Components can be arranged in a wide variety of different configurations that consistently deliver elegant, recognisable and coherent stations. The core components are:<ol><li>Landscape and gathering place&nbsp;</li><li>Activity framework</li><li>Information clocktower</li><li>Platform canopy and amenity pods</li></ol>

<h2>Landscape and gathering place</h2>Each station will have a unique and contextual public realm forecourt space. The space will be open to everyone and designed to encourage people to dwell. Planting will play a key role in these spaces and will include local species. Please see the &#39;Landscape and gathering place&#39; section for more information and to give your ideas on the landscape proposals.From the design team: A clear approach route, connecting station to community. <h2>Activity framework </h2>The &#39;activity framework&#39; &nbsp;will support commercial and community activities. The framework refers to a series of uses and a timber pavilion-like structure, pictured below. The uses of the framework will be tailored to each station. Please see the &#39;A place for the community&#39; section to provide ideas on the activity framework.From the design team:&nbsp;A loose-fit modular framework for a mixture of permanent and pop-up community and commercial uses promotes activity and revenue and serves a vital role in connecting local communities.Uses could include cafe, pop-up retail, market, creche, drop-in clinic, bicycle repair, exercise classes, co-working, meeting places or growing space.<img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/commonplace-digital-limited/image/upload/v1632951576/projects/n8ayxmuwsquoj840agua.jpg" class="fr-fic fr-dib">

<h2>The information clock tower</h2>The clock tower is the landmark feature of the new station design. It is intended to act like a beacon, signalling the station from afar and helping with wayfinding (as well as showing the time). <h2>The platform canopy and pods</h2>Canopies will provide shelter on platforms while generating energy for the stations. Beneath each canopy a series of &#39;pods&#39; will house a variety of amenities, including safe and comfortable waiting areas with plenty of space for walking aids, buggies and luggage. The pods will also integrate information and signage on its walls.Here the architects describe the design:&nbsp;&ldquo;Translucent photovoltaic panels provide shelter from rain and dappled shade while generating energy throughout the day. 3. A place for the community

<h3>In this section we want to hear your views on the community aspects of the station design.</h3><h3 style="text-align: left;">3 minutes to complete&nbsp;</h3>Britain&rsquo;s railway stations are more than just a place to catch a train. And they could play a greater civic role, becoming spaces where people enjoy spending time. Many stations already play a vital community role as meeting places, providing commercial and retail space and acting as gateways to towns and neighbourhoods. The new station design extends this role, specifically through introducing the activity framework&nbsp;(described in &#39;a kit of parts&#39; section).An important aspect of the station design is encouraging new uses specifically tailored to the locality of each station and to the needs of surrounding communities. 4. Local and national identity

<h3>In this section, we want to hear your ideas about how a station could be an icon locally and nationally.</h3><h3>3 minutes to complete&nbsp;</h3>Network Rail want to create the blueprint for a new national design icon &ndash; a station that creates an equitable, recognisable and joyous passenger experience across Britain&#39;s railway network. <h3>What the new station design might look like in different contexts.</h3>Below are examples of how the design could be applied to different locations across Britain to create lively, sustainable transport hubs. 5. Climate change mitigation

<h3>In this section we want to hear your views on the station&#39;s climate change mitigation measures.</h3><h3>4 minutes to complete&nbsp;</h3>Network Rail is committed to mitigating and adapting to climate change. The organisation&#39;s &#39;Environmental Sustainability Strategy 2020 - 2050&#39; includes commitments to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. This is why the design team are working to ensure the new station design will deliver net zero carbon emissions. The design will aid this, and other environmental sustainability measures, in the following ways:Energy use and generationThe station design will utilise technology that will reduce energy use by up to 70% compared with a typical station. This will be achieved through photovoltaic platform canopies producing renewable energy to run the station and onsite batteries&nbsp;to reduce reliance on the national grid.Promoting sustainable onward travelThe new station design will help support and encourage passengers to make onward journeys using sustainable transport through providing electric vehicle charging points, cycle storage and spaces for car clubs/cycle hire as relevant to the local area.Flexible, long-lasting spacesThe &#39;kit of parts&#39; approach allows for easy expansion, with the aim to reduce extensive re-development (and demolition) works in the future. Should a station require expansion, new components would integrate with the existing frame.Carbon neutral materialsThe station design utilises sustainably-sourced, low carbon and recyclable materials. Notably the canopy structure is being developed primarily from recyclable timber - &nbsp;a significant departure from typical steel structures. Investment in high-quality materials from the outset will mean stations look better for longer and are not reliant on frequent maintenance.&nbsp;Landscape and biodiversityEach station includes planting with a focus on local species. In addition to incorporating sustainable drainage where possible, the landscape will also aim to address biodiversity loss and encourage pollinators such as bees and butterflies. 6. Getting to and from the station

<h3>In this section, we want your thoughts on how the station could integrate better with other modes of transport.</h3><h3>2 minutes to complete&nbsp;</h3>Passenger journeys involve a number of different transport modes &ndash; from private vehicles to bicycles and walking and, increasingly, personal electric vehicles such as scooters. Ease of arriving at or leaving a station, or changing to an alternative method of transport, can have a big impact on passenger travel experience. 7. Inclusion and accessibility

<h3>In this section, we want to hear your thoughts on inclusion and accessibility measures at stations.&nbsp;</h3><h3>3 minutes to complete</h3>An inclusive environment is one that works for everybody. Network Rail want everyone to feel welcome, safe and confident when using their stations. It is important that everyone is able to socialise, travel for leisure or to work with ease and comfort. <h3>In this section we want to hear your thoughts on the public entrance spaces in the design.</h3><h3>3 minutes to complete</h3>Often the space around stations is primarily used for car parking. Network Rail wants to see greener, more welcoming stations that create resilient and meaningful spaces for communities.The new station design proposes generous entrances that have<ul><li>Local planting</li><li>Spaces for community and commercial activities</li><li>Spaces for people to gather and dwell</li></ul>Each station will have a unique entrance proposal that will respond to the local context. Planting in particular will be sensitive to the location and the local area, allowing for distinct visual and aesthetic experiences in different places. In October 2021 we asked you for your feedback on the design principles for the HUB station.&nbsp;Since then Network Rail and 7N Architects have been working to incorporate your feedback and ideas.Use the sliders below to see an overview of how the design has changed.

Key design principles for the HUB&nbsp;Station entrance&nbsp;<img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/commonplace-digital-limited/image/upload/v1646224255/projects/yrahb1mg1t2cmelfelvg.jpg" class="fr-fic fr-dib" style="width: 500px;">The clocktower - acts as a beacon helping you to identify the station, its materials and finish can be adapted to reflect the character of your local area. The welcome mat - extends the public space outside the station, creating space between people and cars inviting you to spend time here. The activity framework - a frame that can be adapted to the needs of each place, providing space for local communities and small enterprises alongside station facilities such as ticketing and cycle storage.

Key design principles for HUB Station Platforms The PV canopy - even the smallest HUB stations will come with a timber framed platform canopy, it has integrated photovoltaic (PV) panels which contribute up to 60% of the stations power needs. The pods&nbsp;- create extra shelter under the platform canopy. These include passenger facilities such as waiting rooms and toilet facilities.&nbsp;

In response to the design principles, you told us that: &bull; You support the design principles, &#39;kit of parts&#39; approach and the community and environmental ambitions embedded in this design. <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/commonplace-digital-limited/image/upload/v1645702363/projects/zdchycp0xub24fvntpbn.png" class="fr-fic fr-dib" style="width: 800px;" alt="56% of respondents said they feel welcome and safe when using their local station.">&bull; You were concerned that the &#39;kit of parts&#39; approach may lead to generic and soulless stations. Future stations should be self-sustaining and have a positive impact on the environment. Sustainability must be core to the design brief, not an afterthought.In the first round of engagement you told us that: &bull; You support the environmental and sustainability principles behind of the HUB Station and believe the environment should play an important role in future stations.<img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/commonplace-digital-limited/image/upload/v1645710596/projects/alzsaeejkqvpwqlbrrhr.png" class="fr-fic fr-dib">&nbsp;&bull; You wanted to see more detail on how station designs will reduce energy use and be more energy efficient, for example through insulation, low energy use and solar lighting and infrared radiant heating.<img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/commonplace-digital-limited/image/upload/v1645710620/projects/zuvk531cmz8mnnwpzfrc.png" class="fr-fic fr-dib">&bull; You asked for more detail on the planting and biodiversity strategy, including the specification of native species that are attractive to pollinators; links to other habitats such as rail embankments; and the integration of plants into the overall station design, such as on platforms and green roofs and walls.<h2>What has developed since?</h2><ul id="isPasted"><li id="isPasted">Interrogating the brief to create stations that do more with less</li><li>Detailed analysis to build the case for self-sufficient stations</li><li>Carbon and energy modelling to inform environmentally conscious design decisions</li><li>Developed landscape proposals to increase biodiversity&nbsp;</li><li>Rigorous testing of options including discounting options that are not beneficial to the stations or environment.</li></ul>

<h2>Interrogating the brief<img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/commonplace-digital-limited/image/upload/v1645711037/projects/hrq5jqs0loga5pacqz6i.png" class="fr-fic fr-dib">Sketch showing a typical Category D,E and F Stations, courtesy of 7N Architects.&nbsp;</h2>From the outset, the ambition of HUB has been to offer a better passenger experience and facilities than is typically found in the smallest stations. To do this in a way that is sustainable, it is critical not to overdevelop the station. Network Rail and 7N architects have been working to investigate the brief for stations. They are developing a functional brief for delivery of the &#39;HUB&#39; station which will:<ul><li>Enhance the passenger facilities that are included in stations as a mandatory requirement.</li><li>Establish a consistent standard of facilities across all stations</li><li>Streamline the delivery of stations, allowing local station design teams to focus on site specific issues.&nbsp;</li></ul>This is still in progress, but in practice, it would mean that for HUB stations key aspects of the design such as a canopy and &#39;Welcome Mat&#39; would become mandatory. More stations would receive enhanced passenger facilities such as an accessible WC with baby change, WIFI and electric vehicle charging as standard.

<h2>Energy&nbsp;resilient</h2><h3 style="color:#FCAF17;"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/commonplace-digital-limited/image/upload/v1646236921/projects/luka8geazhlvuiy3os76.jpg" class="fr-fic fr-dib">HUB Station visualisation produced by Pillar Visuals, courtesy of 7N Architects</h3><h3 style="color:#FCAF17;">On-site renewable energy can meet up to 60% of the HUB station&rsquo;s energy demands.&nbsp;</h3>Photovoltaic Panels Standing on the platform on a sunny day, you might notice the dappled light filtering through the solar photovoltaic (PV) canopy. The PVs are embedded in the canopy glass and silently generate between 40-60% of the station&#39;s energy demands. Category D stations generate a higher proportion of energy due to their larger canopies.&nbsp; PV panels help the station to support the energy goals set out in the Network Rail Environmental Sustainability Strategy 2020-2050. Alongside the cost saved from purchasing energy from the national grid, this helps build the case for building platform canopies even at the smallest stations, where previously this would not have been a priority.&nbsp;The carbon saved through generating renewable energy on-site can balance the embodied carbon (the carbon stored within the materials and expelled in their manufacture) within 6 years.&nbsp;

<h2>Carbon conscious decisions</h2><h3 style="color:#FCAF17;">Cross Laminated Timber offers a 65% carbon reduction in comparison to a typical steel frame.</h3>Carbon and energy analysis has been used throughout the design process to assess the different options and make conscious design decisions. This allows the design team to specify materials and products which balance carbon with the robustness required in station environments.<img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/commonplace-digital-limited/image/upload/v1651656548/projects/rfzjmts45rhibogimfoa.jpg" class="fr-fic fr-dib" alt="Visualisation showing a view along the platform with a man waiting under the platform canopy.. For additional shelter a waiting pod can fit in the space beneath the canopy.">Choosing the right materials isn&#39;t as simple as identifying the materials with the lowest embodied carbon. Materials also need to be robust enough to ensure they can last the lifespan of the building. It&#39;s important to consider how easily the structures are constructed, maintained and if they can be re-used or recycled at the end of the building&#39;s life. Life-cycle carbon and energy thresholds will be set within the design guidelines that apply to future stations.

<h2 id="isPasted">Building with Timber<img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/commonplace-digital-limited/image/upload/v1645717392/projects/aoczfxw6khyx9xgh9d8t.jpg" class="fr-fic fr-dib"></h2>The station uses sustainably sourced FSC certified structural timber in place of steel or concrete. The design uses glulam for canopy structure and cross laminated timber for the tower structure.&nbsp;What is laminated timber?&nbsp; Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) is a wood product produced by glueing together timber panels under pressure and heat. By gluing layers of wood at right angles, the panel has a more robust structural rigidity than standard timber panels. Glulam beams are produced using a similar process, but with the laminated panels oriented in the same direction.When a tree grows, it absorbs carbon dioxide from the air, and the carbon stored in the timber becomes part of the structure. When this is considered in carbon analysis, CLT is potentially a carbon negative product - in other words, it stores more carbon than is used in its processing.Timber is light and therefore easier to transport, and it can also be easily assembled on site. Classing can be pre-attached to reduce construction time, which is particularly important to limit the impacts on passengers during station construction.

<h2>Enhancing biodiversity</h2><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/commonplace-digital-limited/image/upload/v1645717287/projects/wyu3vuiwsp2unucgbq40.jpg" class="fr-fic fr-dib">HUB Station visualisation, produced by Pillar Visuals, courtesy of 7N Architects.Each station includes planting with a focus on local species. In addition to incorporating sustainable drainage where possible, the landscape will also aim to address biodiversity loss and encourage pollinators such as bees and butterflies.Find out about Network Rail&#39;s commitment to improving biodiversity in their <a href="https://www.networkrail.co.uk/stories/our-commitment-to-helping-biodiversity/" id="isPasted" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Biodiversity Action Plan.</a>

<h2 id="isPasted">Discounted options&nbsp;</h2>Following feedback from the first round of engagement the design team researched many different options, below are some of the systems discounted as not being suitable for the HUB Station.&nbsp;Rainwater Harvesting&nbsp; Rainwater harvesting was considered to minimise surface water run off and reduce carbon emissions associated with accessing potable water and sewage treatment.&nbsp; This approach was discounted following a detailed review for several reasons, including:&nbsp;<ul><li>The space required for water storage&nbsp;</li><li>The ongoing maintenance requirements for tanks and pumps - particularly as stations are often unmanned</li><li>It was found that the system, at this scale, would increase the stations carbon emissions due to the carbon expended from pumping the water</li></ul>Green Roof&nbsp;The design team considered green roofs to reduce the discharge of rainwater from the roof to the drainage network and to enhance biodiversity.However, this approach was discounted for this design for several reasons, including:<ul><li>It was found that a green roof would offset only a small proportion of the stations Greenhouse Gas emissions through carbon sequestration</li><li>Although a green roof appears to offer a positive option from an embodied carbon perspective, it provides limited carbon offset (approximately 5%)</li><li>Unlike PV panels, there is no reduction in carbon emissions caused by importing electricity, and no financial payback</li></ul>

In response to the design principles you told us: &bull; You want to see safe, warm and well-maintained waiting rooms in all stations with comfortable seating and space for people who use wheelchairs, mobility aids and buggies as well as luggage. <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/commonplace-digital-limited/image/upload/v1645702363/projects/zdchycp0xub24fvntpbn.png" class="fr-fic fr-dib">&bull; You welcomed de-prioritising cars at the station entrance to create a better environment for pedestrians and cyclists. <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/commonplace-digital-limited/image/upload/v1645702431/projects/st3fsvczjaef2x3lylm8.png" class="fr-fic fr-dib">&bull; You said want to see early consultation with local people with particular attention paid to those living with a disability, children and young people, women and vulnerable people to ensure the station can be used by the whole community.<h2>What has developed since?</h2><ul id="isPasted" type="disc"><li>Pod design development to provide sheltered waiting areas and facilities like accessible toilets and baby changing facilities.</li><li>Strategy for integration of signage and equipment in a way that creates stations that are easy and enjoyable to use.</li><li>Lighting design development to create places that feel safe and welcoming and accentuate features of the station.</li><li>Development of detailed inclusion and accessibility strategy through consultation with Network Rail&rsquo;s Built Environment Accessibility Panel.</li></ul>

Smaller stations have less footfall and are unlikely to host traders, community events, or local businesses. There may be more room for activity and local services in urban and suburban contexts, including cafes and local shops such as dry cleaners and affordable, rentable spaces for community and business use.<img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/commonplace-digital-limited/image/upload/v1645716633/projects/g2xkbvfqfa7esud8py10.png" style="width: 800px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib" alt="50% of respondents said they would use their station more if it included community services and facilities.">&bull; You felt that basic but well-maintained community amenities are valued, including book swaps, accessible and clean toilets, and warm, dry places to sit.

The activity framework - &nbsp;A space for communities and small enterprises to occupy, to enhance and diversify the offer and facilities of the station.&nbsp;<h2 id="isPasted">What has developed?</h2><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/commonplace-digital-limited/image/upload/v1645704567/projects/jrw8vfnkyz3shtjzisiv.jpg" class="fr-fic fr-dib">The activity framework is a pergola-like frame that sits outside the station and can house key facilities such as a ticket office, waiting spaces and community and enterprise activities.&nbsp;Different sized activity frameworks can be created to meet the needs of different stations.Like the waiting pods on the platforms, Pods can provide additional cover or create internal spaces where community and commercial activities occur.&nbsp; These structures and the public space around the stations offer the building blocks for activities to take place.&nbsp;The community&#39;s input is required to understand how these spaces can best be occupied.&nbsp;<img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/commonplace-digital-limited/image/upload/v1646218825/projects/otfsqrxczgxl1jugi1tw.jpg" class="fr-fic fr-dib"><h3 id="isPasted">&ldquo;If this design makes it possible for communities to imprint upon these stations, promote stories from the local area, local art, heritage, culture, be a part of the design, giving the stations their own individual personality then I think it works as a basic template.&quot;</h3>Commonplace User Feedback

How these spaces are managed and used at different stations will vary depending on the local context and appetite.&nbsp;<h2>Self-sustaining activities</h2>These activities could be something that is adopted by local station staff or be a passion project led by individual community members. Once established, there is little ongoing management required.&nbsp; Examples could include:<ul><li>A book exchange</li><li>A community noticeboard</li><li>A cycle repair workstation</li><li>An yoga, walking or meditation group</li></ul>

They are primarily for the benefit of the community. They require ongoing management and planning and may generate small amounts of income. There are over 2,000 small to medium-sized stations across Great Britain and the design could play a role in significantly improving our environment in urban, semi-urban and rural environments and creating places for communities. <h2 id="isPasted">What happens next?</h2>Your views and ideas help shape Network Rail&#39;s station delivery guidance and ensure local station delivery teams can make the most of the opportunities the HUB station can offer. The proposals are refined further through technical detailed design and specification.The HUB station design is a &#39;kit of parts&#39; that can be used or adapted to suit the needs and objectives of different locations and communities across Great Britain. When a new station, or station improvement is commissioned there will be a local engagement process and development programme to understand and respond to local priorities.
